2 Day Wheel Throwing Boot Camp on Thursday, June 15th, and Friday, June 16th
Tim See works with learners at every level, and whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced Potter, you’ll be welcome in his Wheel Throwing Workshop at ARTworks Vass!
At the beginning of this Workshop, Tim will assess the priorities of those in attendance, and they’ll become the focus of our time together. You can expect to throw pots of many types, including tumblers, mugs, bowls, plates & platters, vases, lidded vessels, or teapots. He’ll demonstrate, and then with his guidance and feedback, you’ll have time to try his techniques on the wheel.
2 Day Surface Decorating Workshop, Saturday, June 17, and Sunday, June 18th
Surface Decorating is what takes a pot from good to great! 2 days of focus with Tim will provide you with a very broad overview that will fill your toolbox and stimulate your creativity for weeks, months, and even years to come!
In this workshop, Tim will orient students to the major decision points at which decoration can be considered: wet clay, shaping, leather hard, bone dry, bisqued, or glazed. He’ll then demonstrate techniques which can be used at each of those stages. Tim has at least 30 techniques that he can demonstrate during this workshop, and we’re looking forward to learning as many of them as time will allow!
What can I expect from each Workshop?
Our Wheel Throwing Workshop will be process based, and not project driven. We’ll be making and wrecking a lot of clay, however we won’t be making any work to take home or kiln fire.
You can expect to leave our Surface Decorating Workshop with a collection of tiles you produced or worked on that show each technique and will connect to a handout with the timing parameters and descriptions.

What’s included?
A dedicated wheel to use during our Wheel Throwing Workshop.
Clay. We’ll use Highwater Clay’s Cone 6 Speckled Brownstone.
Use of a basic tool kit that Tim will share during our Wheel Throwing Pottery Workshop.
Tim will bring all of the slip, underglaze, brushes and most of the tools that we'll use for Surface Decorating. For most, we'll have multiple tools for each process, and guests can share and pass them around to use.
Loving attention! As a guest of ARTworks Vass, we want you to enjoy every moment that you spend with us! Upon registration, Jean Skipper will share her cell number with you, and she’ll be available to you before, during, and after your visit for anything that you might need while you’re with us or along the way.
What should I bring?
Most importantly, bring your curiosity, enthusiasm, and a beginner’s heart!
An Apron if you’d care to use one.
Tools and glazes that you absolutely must have with you, or those that you’d like to discuss with Tim.
Any Nibbles and sips that you just can’t live without.
A Pottery Wheel?! Only if you really want to use your very own wheel! Several guests have requested this option. If you're interested in bringing your own wheel, please leave us a note when you register so that we can make plans to accommodate your request.
What will we eat and drink?
Meals will not be provided during these Workshops. You may either bring your meals, or you may purchase them from one of our local restaurants. Crossroads Coffee is located directly beside ARTworks Vass. Homegrown Restaurant is just a block away, and Valenti’s Restaurant is within a mile. A bakery, Amazing Glaze, is located across the street from us. Subway, a Chinese Restaurant, Little Caesars’ and a grocery store (The Piggly Wiggly!) are all located in the neighborhood too.
You may enjoy our Beverage Station with bottled water, coffee pods, tea, cream, sugar, and sweeteners.
Our Snack Station will be available to you, with a variety of salty and sweet snacks.
You’ll have use of our two refrigerators, a microwave and a Keurig.
Wine is welcome at the end of each day’s Workshop, as are other alcoholic beverages.
Where should I stay?
There are a variety of lodging options locally, and AirBnB is one of our favorites! ARTworks Vass is located directly in the center of Vass. Any listings showing “Vass, NC or “Horse Country” are generally within ten minutes of the gallery. Locations in Carthage, Southern Pines or Pinehurst are generally within 20 minutes. (We're unable to include a direct link to this search, so create your own search using the destination of "Vass, NC". If you have any questions about the results, please contact us anytime.)
We’ve also heard positive things about the hotels that follow:
- Hilton Garden Inn Southern Pines Pinehurst
- Hampton Inn and Suites Southern Pines
- TownePlace Suites by Marriott - Southern Pines Aberdeen
- Holiday Inn Express and Suites – Southern Pines & Pinehurst Areas
- Homewood Suites by Hilton – Olmsted Village Near Pinehurst
Is there more? Yes!
We love our Community, and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you!
If you’ll be attending the Wheel Throwing Workshop and arriving at least a day early, Jean will be coordinating a tour of Seagrove aka “Pottery Country”. (Leave a comment on your registration if you’re interested!) Our Pottery Tour will be happening on Wednesday, June 14th. We’ll leave the gallery by 10:00, and we’ll adjust as needed based on the group’s interest.
On Friday evening, after our Wheel Throwing Workshop, ARTworks Vass will host an Opening for Tim. As registered guests, you’ll have a sneak peek and first dibs on his latest body of work!
On Saturday after class, we’ll plan an evening out and about in the Community. Jean has this narrowed down to two possibilities, and she’ll confirm the details with you soon. If all goes well, we’ll either enjoy dinner in the middle of nowhere at a Friend’s farm (Luckily the “Middle of Nowhere” is only 10 minutes from the gallery!) or we’ll visit a local Cider Orchard and Tasting Room for tasty local sips, food truck fare, and music bingo if anyone’s interested. Workshop guests are welcome to join us for this. (We thought that it might be fun to have a relaxing social evening together, and we hope that you will too!)
On Monday, if you’d like to spend “just-one-more-day” creating and practicing all that you’ve learned, we’ll be happy to extend your time with us with a Free Open Studio.
Several of you asked about the classes that we offer in other mediums. If there are particular classes that you’d like to take while you’re with us, please tell us when you register, and let us know your travel dates. We’ll do our best to host them during your time here.
And finally, if you’d like to learn more about all that there is to do in our area, click here to visit our local Convention and Visitors Bureau.
