Are you a color lover or a fan of whimsical, fun paintings?
If so, you'll love this brand-new workshop with Jodi Ohl, “Whimsical Flowers: Exploring Whimsical Floral Painting”. You'll learn to let loose and create multi layered compositions focusing on imaginary flower ‘still-life’ or dream-like fantasy flowers.
While you'll primarily use acrylic paint, you'll also incorporate several mixed media supplies that will add to the drama, fun, and 3-D like look of your fanciful flowers.
Over the course of this class, you'll learn tips on Color Mixing and how to:
- Choose a strong palette
- Use a variety of acrylic mediums to achieve your desired effect
- Create a dynamic & colorful composition full of whimsy
- Enhance your work by adding volume, depth, shading, and highlights
- Plus much more!
Supplies Included:
- 1 - 20" x 20" Painting Surface
- Water Color Paper
- Acrylic Mediums
- Mixed Media supplies such as Caran D’ache crayons, colored pencils, assorted water-soluble products and more
- A variety of acrylic paint for students to share. (Feel free to bring your favorite colors that you just can't live without!)
- A variety of colored pencils (Inktense, Polychrome, Derwint Graphitint, etc.) and a sampling of some of Jodi's favorites. Feel free to bring your favorites too!
Optional Supplies
- 1 Additional 20" x 20" Painting Surface, and everything that you'll need to work on an extra project in class.
- This option is available at registration only.
- This option is available at a cost of $55.
What you should bring:
- Your favorite paint brushes: large, small, round, and flat.
- A journal to make notes, develop designs, and to work in during down time
- An Apron
- A Palette (The "Masterson Sta-Wet Premier Palette" is one of Jodi's newest favorites.)
- A Water Container.

Schedule
Saturday, 8/26, 9:00 - 4:00, including a 1 hour break for lunch on your own.
The Morning Session includes preparing surfaces, learning about supplies and watching demonstration of techniques. We'll jumpstart projects, discuss composition, and practice drawings. In the Afternoon Session, we'll work on paper and blocking colors for designing the main composition.
Sunday, 8/27, 9:00 - 4:00, including a 1 hour break for lunch on your own.
Morning Session includes a variety of demonstrations and discussions on layering, revealing, concealing, and working with colors. Our Afternoon Session will be all about shifting, editing, and refining our work.
Monday, 8/28, 9:00 - 4:00
Our final Morning Session will be spent examining and enhancing our compositions based on the work, and discussing the finalization of our projects. Just before lunch, we'll view our Student Gallery, answer remaining questions, and Jodi will make one final commentary. After lunch, guests are invited to continue to work independently in our Studio Classroom until 4:00.
About Your Instructor
Jodi Ohl is a best-selling author, award winning mixed media artist and creative instructor originally from Dunkirk, NY, who now resides in Aberdeen, NC. Having left her day job to pursue her artistic career full time, she has built a body of work that is known for its distinctive texture, bold color combinations which are often whimsical or abstract compositions, as well as motivational in nature. Her art appeals to those who seem to be young at heart and who appreciate the positive side of life whether communicated through words, colors, or composition.
Other Important Information:
- Registration allows for 1 person per class. Only those who have registered may participate.
- Dress to mess, and bring your own apron if you'd like to wear one.
- Class starts promptly, so be sure to arrive on time.
- Registrations are non-refundable.

What will we eat and drink?
Meals are not be provided during these Workshops. You may either bring your meals, or you may purchase them from one of our local restaurants. Crossroads Coffee is located directly beside ARTworks Vass. Homegrown Restaurant is just a block away, and Valenti’s Restaurant is within a mile. A bakery, Amazing Glaze, is located across the street from us. Subway, a Chinese Restaurant, Little Caesars’ and a grocery store (The Piggly Wiggly!) are all located in the neighborhood too.
You may enjoy our Beverage Station with bottled water, coffee pods, tea, cream, sugar, and sweeteners.
Our Snack Station will be available to you, with a variety of salty and sweet snacks.
You’ll have use of our two refrigerators, a microwave and a Keurig.
Wine is welcome at the end of each day’s Workshop, as are other alcoholic beverages.
Where should I stay?
There are a variety of lodging options locally, and AirBnB is one of our favorites! ARTworks Vass is located directly in the center of Vass. Any listings showing “Vass, NC or “Horse Country” are generally within ten minutes of the gallery. Locations in Carthage, Southern Pines or Pinehurst are generally within 20 minutes. (We're unable to include a direct link to this search, so create your own search using the destination of "Vass, NC". If you have any questions about the results, please contact us anytime.)
