3/25/24 Altered Books: The Creative Book Circle with Stacey Mataxis Whitlow
“In this club, we’ll read books that will inspire you to live a more creative life and find the artistic spirit that resides in us all." - Austin Kleon.
Join Stacey on Monday, Mar. 25th from 5:30 to 8:30 pm as she wraps up the first art studio twist on the classic book club. Every three months, we will pick a relevant book and enjoy reading it while altering it to meet the emotions and moments that grab our attention. By the time this 3-class series is finished, you will have enjoyed a book and created an individualized piece of art that has significant meaning to you by altering the text as you read it.
We will meet at 5:30 pm on Monday, Mar. 25th. Our book selection for January, February, and March is entitled Wintering by Katherine May.
Additional items available:
- A copy of the book for $25
“THE RUNAWAY NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - AS HEARD ON NPR MORNING EDITION Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she endured this painful time and embraced the singular opportunities it offered.
A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world, May's story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas.
Ultimately, Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat, joy in the tranquil beauty of winter, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical, not linear. A secular mystic, May forms a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering of a new season.”
