1/22/25 - 2/5/25 - Children's Pottery Making Class Series - 1 of 3 with Jean Skipper
Kids just want to make Pottery, and this Class Series with Jean Skipper is a great place for them to start! The memories and the hand built pottery pieces that they create are sure to be as unique as they are, and they'd make great holiday gifts too.
School Aged Children are invited to join Jean for 3 Sessions of Hand Built Pottery Making and Glazing. Class will be held from 3:00 until 5:00 on Wednesdays, 1/22, 1/29, and 2/5. The skills taught in each session build on each other, and below you'll find a description of the lessons that will be covered.
Class size is limited to allow for maximum attention for each child.
For those enrolling in this class series multiple times, the possibilities for creating in each of these forms is limitless, and Jean will work with your Children to ensure that they'll continue to build skills while creating in new and different ways each time that they attend.
Class Outline:
- Session 1 - 1/22/25 - We'll begin with an introduction and tour of the ARTworks Vass Pottery Studio, with an emphasis on materials, best practices for safety, and the keys to success in pottery making. Guests will learn about the safe operation of our equipment and tools. They'll practice handling and texturing clay, and create a single Love Bug in Jean's signature stule. Our focus in this session will be on Slab Construction, and guests will each create 3 handmade ornaments that will be used to make their own One-of-a-Kind Suncatchers or Windchimes. (Please note that the Pottery Windchime shown in these photos features a Cross motiff, and the ones that we create in class will feature basic shapes and hearts.)
- Session 2 - 1/29/25 - Guests will learn more about the process for two dimensional slab construction, and they'll each create 3 of their own custom Heart or Round Shaped Pottery Trinket Dishes, our version of the iconic "Conversation Hearts Candy". These will be perfect for personal use, or for Valentine's Day Gift Giving. As time permits, wind chime components will also be glazed during this class session.
- Session 3 - 2/5/25 - Decorating Day! Remaining work from previous sessions will have been kilned fired for the first time, and it will be ready and waiting to be glazed. The structures for Windchimes will also be created during this session using wood, wire, beads, fibers, and other embellishments. Freshly glazed pieces will be kiln fired one more time, and work will be ready to pick up in time for Valentine's Day. (Please note that if your children are unable to attend Decorating Day, their pottery creations will be labeled and stored under their name. You may then return with them at any time during regular business hours to glaze. Depending on the timing of your glazing session, work may or may not be ready for pickup before Valentine's Day.)
The all inclusive price for this class is $139 per child.
We define "School Aged Children" as those who are able to follow our instructions, those who can work relatively independently in our classroom during a full class session of 2 hours, and those who function independently in the bathroom. If you feel that your Children may have an easier time with you creating beside them as a registered student in class, please register with them. If you have any doubt as to whether this class would be a good fit for your Children or you, please text Jean personally before registering at 910-528-1109.
Please note that your Children's safety is more important to us than any amount of money, and this is reflected in the seriousness with which we take pottery studio cleanliness and safety.
Many of the risks involved in making pottery can be minimized by establishing a clean studio practice, and we'll focus on this at every step of our process. This will be emphasized repeatedly during classes, and your children will be expected to leave their workspaces as clean as they found them.
Pottery making tools can be sharp or hot, and the equipment that we use can inflict serious bodily harm if not used purposefully and safely. In-depth training and verbal instruction about this will be provided before Children are permitted to use these items themselves.
We have a zero-tolerance policy for Guests who break our safety rules. While we don't anticipate challenges during this class, we want you to be aware that Children who break these rules will immediately be asked to stop participating in the class session that they're attending. Depending on the severity of what they've done, they may also be banned from attending future classes in this series. In the unlikely event that this happens, no refunds will be provided.
