9/6/26 - 3 Class Series: Long Leaf Pine Needle Basket Weaving with Karen Habicht at ARTworks Vass
Step into nature and learn the beautiful art of pine needle basketry with Karen Habicht on Sunday, Sept. 6, 13, and 20th from 1:00 to 4:00. Using Long Leaf Pine Needles gathered from our local landscape, you'll discover how to forage, prepare, and weave these natural treasures into a stunning one-of-a-kind basket. This hands-on class celebrates creativity, sustainability, and a craft that has endured for centuries.
The entire process can be hard work, from finding appropriate long leaf pine needle trees, to collecting the pine needles, to cleaning and prepping the pine needles, to sewing the baskets and ornaments. For the class, Karen provides everything you need, just bring your focus, creativity, and a willingness to learn. If you have a basket middle that you’d like to weave the basket around, bring it and she'll see if she can make it work.
This class is perfect for beginners eager to try something new as well as intermediate makers looking to grow their skills. (A little homework may be given if you need extra time between sessions.)
In this class you’ll learn how to:
- Identify and responsibly gather Long Leaf Pine needles
- Clean and prepare your needles for crafting
- Select the right threads and tools
- Learn basic pine needle sewing techniques
- Make a Longleaf Pine Needle basket to completion
- (For experienced students) Add beads, handles, and other flourishes

- Students 14 and older may attend on their own.
- Students under 14 are welcome if accompanied by a registered, participating adult.
- Each registration covers one guest per project.
- Only registered guests may attend.
- Registrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled.
- No credit is given for missed classes.
- Class begins promptly at the scheduled time.
- Please dress for mess (or bring an apron).
